Katie Fairbank
Like my sister (Beth Roy, class of 1986) I mainly knew Mr. Trautwein from the orchestra pit. Being around the choir was like being a guest at your college roommate's house for Thanksgiving dinner, with the table set for 30 and a seat for whoever else might drop in.
Between 1986 and 1990 I had the privilege of watching as my classmates start in the chorus and command bigger and bigger roles. I watched as the shows took shape, as leads were selected and paired. I watched a family, headed by a loud, demanding, loving and devoted father.
Providing this sort of second family was, I think, what made GT so special to so many. And though I didn't know him well he made a critical impression on my life. If we're lucky in life we have these sort of exemplars in our lives - teachers whose passion and commitment seep into our growing bones and shape who we become.
By all means, we should honor his wonderful influence. Dedicating the space he founded at BB is a lovely idea. And more, it's encouraging to consider that among those he touched are spirited parents and professionals, bringing out the very best in the growing children around them.
How lovely this chorus sounds now!
