Jeff Futterman

Jeff Futterman

The memories are flooding back to me over the last few days. I'd like to share one as I think it describes what kind of person Mr. Trautwein is (I have to refer to him as Mr. Trautwein). It was opening night for Pirates and I was nervous. But, before the show, I was doing something I wasn't supposed to be doing, and Mr. Trautwein called me out on it. To be more accurate, he threw one of his famous rantings. So, before the show, I was not only nervous, but now I was upset because I disappointed Mr. Trautwein. I took my place for the opening scene, and Mr. Trautwein took his famous spot behind the piano. I caught his eye. He looked at me and made one those famous faces. He growled and lifted the corner of his mouth. I cannot explain it, but that look took away all my nervousness and fear. He just had this way about him that is difficult to put into words. It was like he knew exactly what I needed at that time, and he provided it. After all these years, and all that's happened in my life, that's the stuff I remember. I love him dearly as I love so many of you. I look back on my high school years with nothing but fondness. Mr. Trautwein, along with Doc, Presto, Del, Pete, Mr. Mills, Ms. Patrao and so many others made it so.
