Oh how I remember this wonderful man. I started out singing with him in a chorus at William Street School, then, for some reason when i got to Jr. Hi., he asked me to come over and sing with his high school chorus. We rehearsed early in the a.m. before school, and I always had to really hoof it to make it to class back over at the Jr. Hi. Along with being able to do something neat with the folks who were all older than me and have some amazing high school girl-younger boy experiences, I had the pleasure of many years, including my high school years with Mr. T. I even got coerced into singing at the Episcopal Church on Sundays with Mr. Mauney playing the organ. Like others, I always trembled at his rantings and carryings on (at least initially), but somehow knew what he was doing and saw the good he got from people, especially those you wouldn't expect, and how he got the amazing results from just average kids... especially me! He seemed to delight in the confrontations with the jocks... who always backed down at this nose-to-nose screamings (and encouragement... Mr. Trautwein style). It's almost comical, looking back, at how one can both love and fear someone at the same time. I was delighted at the students who have reported some of the same antics we all experienced carrying over into the 80's and 90's... but what would you expect?? I remember on more than one occasion someone referring to him as Mr. "Fish-Liquor" ... Troutwein... get it? I always expected him to walk out of the wall and totally squash that individual. It never happened, but I always feared it.
